Casting of the principal roles in Disney Theatrical Productions' upcoming stage adaptation of The Little Mermaid has been completed, and the list includes a number of well-known Broadway names. In addition to the previously announced Sierra Boggess as Ariel, the cast will include Sherie René Scott as Ursula, Sean Palmer as Prince Eric, Norm Lewis as King Triton, Tituss Burgess as Sebastian, Eddie Korbich as Scuttle, Jonathan Freeman as Grimsby, Derrick Baskin as Jetsam, Tyler Maynard as Flotsam and Cody Hanford and J.J. Singleton as Flounder.
The Little Mermaid will play a seven-week engagement at Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts beginning July 26, officially opening on August 23 and playing through September 9. Performances begin on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on November 3, with opening night set for December 6 under the direction of Francesca Zambello.
The musical featured a score that includes the classic songs "Part of Your World," "Kiss the Girl" and the Academy Award-winning Best Original Song, "Under the Sea," composed by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman. There are 11 new songs by Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater. The book is by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award -winning playwright Doug Wright.
Boggess is currently starring as Christine in Phantom Las Vegas and has appeared in the national tour of Les Miserables, West Side Story and the world premiere of Princesses. Scott received a Tony Award nomination for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and starred on Broadway in Disney's Aida. Other theater credits include Tommy, Rent, Landscape of the Body Obie Award, The Last Five Years, Debbie Does Dallas, Faust and Over and Over. With her husband, Kurt Deutsch, Scott co-founded Sh-K-Boom/Ghostlight Records.
Palmer was recently cast as Chip in On the Town at the English National Opera. His Broadway credits includeThe Apple Tree, Saturday Night Fever, Fosse and Dream. Off Broadway credits include A Tree Grows In Brooklyn Encores! and The Long Christmas Ride Home. Regional credits include Of Thee I Sing, Kiss Me Kate and The Boy Friend.
Lewis is currently playing Javert in the Broadway revival of Les Miserables. Other Broadway credits include Chicago, Amour, The Wild Party, Side Show, Miss Saigon and Tommy. Off-Broadway credits include Dessa Rose, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Captains Courageous and A New Brain. Concert performances include Chess, Dreamgirls and Golden Boy. Regional credits include Ragtime, Dreamgirls and The Fantasticks.
Burgess recently played the Cowardly Lion in The Wiz as La Jolla Playhouse. Broadway credits include Jersey Boys and Good Vibrations. Burgess was featured in Disney World's Festival of the Lion King and has been a soloist for Disney Conventions.
Korbich is currently appearing on Broadway as George in The Drowsy Chaperone. Other Broadway credits include After The Night and the Music, Wicked, Seussical, Carousel, Sweeney Todd and Singin' in the Rain. Off-Broadway include Takin' a Chance on Love, Assassins, Godspell, The Gifts of the Magi, Eating Raoul;,Flora, the Red Menace and A Little Night Music.
Freeman is currently playing Cogsworth in the Broadway production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Other Broadway credits include The Producers, 42nd Street, On the Town, How to Succeed..., She Loves Me Tony nomination and Platinum. Off-Broadway credits include Finian's Rainbow, Sail Away, Of Thee I Sing, Li'l Abner, A Class Act and An Empty Plate. On film, he provided the voice of Jafar in Disney's Aladdin.
Baskin is currently playing Mitch Mahoney in the Broadway production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Other credits include Aida, the world premiere of Memphis, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Ragtime and Sundiata the Lion King of Mali.
Maynard is currently playing Valentine in the Broadway production of Mary Poppins. Other New York credits include Altar Boyz, Mamma Mia, Miracle Brothers, Bye Bye Birdie and workshops of Xanadu, Good Vibrations, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Disney's On the Record.
Hanford is making his Broadway debut. Regional credits include The Wizard of Oz, Evita and Fiddler on the Roof. He starred opposite Dakota Fanning in the feature film Hounddog Sundance Film Festival 2007 and portrayed Tommy Cash in Walk the Line.
Singleton made his Broadway debut playing Young Simba in Disney's The Lion King and has performed in benefits for Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS.
